{"id":4264,"date":"2010-11-26T14:19:33","date_gmt":"2010-11-26T14:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.followthatfireengine.com\/news\/?p=4264"},"modified":"2017-07-22T14:33:30","modified_gmt":"2017-07-22T13:33:30","slug":"day-131-schoolies-and-toolies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.followthatfireengine.com\/news\/expedition-updates\/day-131-schoolies-and-toolies\/","title":{"rendered":"Day 131 : Schoolies and Toolies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High point: Getting the laptop fixed by the dudes at Clix Computer Centre <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clixcc.com.au\/\">http:\/\/www.clixcc.com.au\/<\/a> and saying good riddance to the scary blue screen of death<\/p>\n<p>Low point: saying good bye to the lovely Miss Louise Mahoney at Byron bus station.\u00a0 Awesome work Lou, you rock!<\/p>\n<p>No point: being a toolie<\/p>\n<p>Byron Bay is the perfect place to go if you need to kick back and relax, maybe recharge your batteries if you\u2019ve been driving a big red truck around Australia.\u00a0 The atmosphere is so chilled out its horizontal, with a big alternative scene and hippy population.\u00a0 In November however it\u2019s a different story, the town is overtaken by high school graduates known as \u2018schoolies\u2019 who in true Oz tradition take a week off to party hard after their final exams.\u00a0 Who can blame them?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to be in Bryon Bay for schoolies week, are you mad?\u201d was the usual reaction from people who enquired about our route.\u00a0 We were warned of the carnage and bad behaviour that often accompanies \u2018schoolies week\u2019 but more often than not we were told to watch out for the \u2018toolies\u2019.\u00a0 Why would we need to watch out for tradesmen, we weren\u2019t planning on having an extension built or a bathroom fitted, it didn\u2019t make sense?\u00a0 I\u2019ve referred to Wikipedia for an official definition of a \u2018toolie\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Toolies = older revelers who participate in schoolies week but are not high-school graduates.\u00a0 The word is derived from the notation \u2018too old for schoolies\u2019 and also the slang expression tool.<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy to say the \u2018schoolies\u2019 and \u2018toolies\u2019 didn\u2019t bother us, but the experience did leave us questioning why the Aussies like to shorten everything.\u00a0 I\u2019ll leave you with a few examples we\u2019ve come across\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Amy<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u2018o\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Servo = service station<\/p>\n<p>Ambo = ambulance<\/p>\n<p>Fisho = fish &amp; chip shop<\/p>\n<p>Bottle-o = Off licence<\/p>\n<p>Arvo = afternoon<\/p>\n<p><strong>The \u2018ie\u2019s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Firie = firemen<\/p>\n<p>Coldie = a beer<\/p>\n<p>Brekkie = breakfast<\/p>\n<p>Pokies = fruit machines<\/p>\n<p>Vedgies = vegetables<\/p>\n<p>[flickr album=72157625374492937 num=30 size=Square]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High point: Getting the laptop fixed by the dudes at Clix Computer Centre http:\/\/www.clixcc.com.au\/ and saying good riddance to the scary blue screen of death Low point: saying good bye to the lovely Miss Louise Mahoney at Byron bus station.\u00a0 Awesome work Lou, you rock!
