Day 119 : There’s a fire engine in my room!

14 November 2010

Port Augusta to Adelaide

High Point: Staying in the beautiful Fire Station Inn in North Adelaide

Low Point: Getting lost around Adelaide and their endless amount of roads (or so it seemed)

No Point: Looking for bushes when it was toilet stop time

Meal of the Day: Lunch at the Port Dock Restaurant at Port Adelaide

There we were mouths wide upon as we tried to take in our surroundings. Were we dreaming or was there really a fire engine in our room?! We had to pinch ourselves. This place was remarkable and for once all of us were speechless.

We had come across the Fire Station Inn by chance. Looking for accommodation options for the night, I happened to look past the budget page this once and found the ideal place, a converted fire station and it sounded absolutely perfect for us.

Pulling up outside later that day we were greeted by the owners of the apartments, Rodney and Regina Twiss. As keen travellers themselves they were particularly interested in the expedition and hearing our story. Leading us in and showing us around, we couldn’t quite believe our luck, the place was like a dream and what’s more they were kindly putting us up for free. As the boys would say, we well and truly lucked out. We’d come from camping along the outback or staying in shoddy motel rooms filled with beetles to this and this was incredible. The old Fire Station had its own fire engine, themed rooms, jacuzzi baths and the original fireman’s pole. What more could you ask for?! To say we acted like teenagers would be a complete understatement, we were like kids in a sweet shop.

Our day in Adelaide prior to this had been a mixture of joy and confusion. Having spent the past week travelling down one road and only turning right or left every 6 hours, Adelaide was a complete shock to the system. We had kindly been invited to lunch in Port Adelaide, yet the sudden road choices played havoc and we arrived just in time. After a good feed with the boys opting for the local delicacy of Kangaroo Steak, there was just enough time for Steve to get on the mic and spread the FTFE message. With that we were off on our way, with everyone waving us off. All we had to do was find our way to North Adelaide. It couldn’t be that hard, surely?!
