Day 128 : Its Sydney Showtime!

23 November 2010

Starring : Martha the Mercedes

Co-starring : the FTFE crew, Sydney Fire Fighters, a Police Escort, two Ozzie fire engines, Channel 9 News crew and 14 crabs

Act 1 : A spectacular convoy across Sydney Harbour Bridge

Act 2 : A monumental match at City of Sydney Fire Station

Grand finale : The crabs go crazy at The Friend in Hand, Glebe

Today Martha was to hit the big screen, her name in lights, this was her Martine Mccutcheon moment.  We had to make sure she looked gorgeous darlings. Cleaning her windscreen with baby wipes and bottled water wasn’t going to cut it, a garage screen wash the only way to make sure she was dressed to impress.

Act 1 : Steve Moore was in the hot seat, he’d played this role many times before but this time was different, no second takes, this time it mattered.  As a police escort set the pace the impressive convoy, Martha and two Sydney fire engines, made their way to Sydney Harbour bridge, the Channel 9 News Team hot on their tail.

It was a rousing performance from our leading lady, Steve stepping up to the challenge and driving like a true professional.

The hard work that had gone on behind the scenes to ensure a flawless performance was obvious.  The timing was impeccable, traffic lights all turned to green (think Italian job) as the entourage headed over the ‘coathanger’, filmed by Channel 9 as they weaved through the traffic.

The morning was topped off by an inspiring TV interview from Steve and the crew.  A big thank you to the Highway Patrol, the Commissioner, New South Wales Fire Brigade, Ian Beattie and Channel 9 News for making it all possible.

Act 2 : It was hot, it was sweaty, it was gritty.  The audience weren’t ready for another Australia v England clash, so the FTFE crew played alongside the talented Aussie fire fighters.  The crew took their roles very seriously, except for Amy, who seemed to be there to make up the numbers.  As the two teams competed relentlessly, it wasn’t about taking part, it was all about winning.  But after 5 matches of blood, sweat and tears, there was only one winner… volleyball.

Grand Finale : The Friend in Hand is world famous for crab racing.  As the race caller, Dom, set up the crab track (a circular platform that the crabs race from the centre to the edge) the atmosphere was tense.  Spectators had paid $5 to name and race their crabs and they were ready to see what they were made of.  The race wasn’t straight forward by any means. The favourite ‘Crabs’ got a dream run and looked the most likely winner, only to get confused before the finish line and be overtaken by underdog ‘Snail Trail’, who walked away with first place.  After an impressive run by newcomer ‘Fish cake’, coming in second, the crowd went wild. To top it all off $230 was raised for Follow That Fire Engine.  Result!
